AUS Open: Indian campaign ends in men's doubles

India's campaign in the men's double event at the Australian Open has come to an end. The 15th seeds Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan, the Indo-Mexican duo of Leander Paes and Miguel Angel Reyes-Varela and the Indo-US combination of Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and Nicholas Monroe, all crashed out in the first round.

Nedunchezhiyan and Monroe were the first to taste defeat on Wednesday, losing 6-4, 6-7 (8), 5-7 to the German-Croat pair of Kevin Krawietz and Nikola Mektic. The duo of Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan went down to the Spanish team of Pablo Carreno Busta and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. Bopanna and Divij did well to come back after losing the opening set, but eventually lost the 1-6, 6-4, 5-7.

Paes, who was playing his 24th Australian Open, went down in straight sets with his partner Reyes-Varela. The veteran and his partner lost 5-7, 6-7 (4) to the US-Kiwi duo of Austin Krajicek and Artem Sitak.

After Prajnesh Gunneswaran's loss in the first round of the men's singles event and no player in the women's doubles event with Sania Mirza still not playing at the competitive level after the birth of her child, the Indian interest now lies in the mixed doubles event, which starts later in the week.
