US Fake University racket: 129 Indian students arrested

US Fake University racket: 129 Indian students arrestedOn Saturday, India said it had lodged a protest with the United States government after several Indian students were detained there in connection with theirenrollment in a fake university, following an undercover operation by the US agents.

On the otherside, US State Department has said that 130 foreign students, including 129 Indians detained in a ‘pay and stay’ scheme involving Farmington University, knew that they were registering with a fake university to illegally stay in US. According to US State department, the Indian were aware that they are committing a crime.

The university was created by Immigration and Customs Enforcement to lure in more than 600 students, of which 130 were arrested last week.

The 129 Indian students were arrested by DHS for enrolling at University of Farmington to remain in US. The US Department of Homeland Security also arrested 8 Indians for running a racket to recruit Indian students to stay illegally in United States by enrolling them into  metro Detroit private university, which was actually being operated by the US agents themselves.

The names of the eight  Indians are – Phanideep Karnati, Santosh Sama, Avinash Thakkallapally, Aswanth Nune, Barath Kakireddy, Suresh Kandala, Prem Rampeesa and Naveen Prathipati.

About 10 years ago, Phanideep Karnati immigrated from India to US on an H1-B visa in search of the American dream. He earned  master degree at the University of Louisville in Kentucky and became an IT engineer.  He has been released on a bond of $10,000.

Except for Phanideep Karnati, who is on a work visa, the defendants will not be released from the jail because they have immigration holds since they are undocumented since the US revealed the university they were enrolled in was fake.

Phanideep Karnati and others at the university have roots in the Telugu-speaking region of India.

Meanwhile, India has urged the United States that the 129 Indian students detained in the case be released even as those involved in running the racket continue to face trial.
