India's No. 1 player Prajnesh Gunneswaran failed to repeat his Indian Wells heroics at the Miami Masters as he lost in the first round. The Indian qualifier was beaten 6-7 (3), 4-6 by Spain’s world No 61 Jaume Munar.
The Indian, who had reached the third round of the Indian Wells tournament, had qualified for the main draw with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Jay Clarke in the rain-delayed qualifiers. In the first round, Prajnesh had defeated Spain's Adrian Menendez-Maceiras 6-2, 6-4.
In his second straight Masters 1000 main draw, the world No 84 failed to capitalise on an early break by losing his serve on the first break point he faced.
The set was eventually decided via a tie-break and the better-ranked player from Spain proved too strong, taking the first set for the loss of three points.
The second set saw Munar press advantage, converting two of the six break point while saving just the one he faced. Overall, the Indian southpaw was weak on his serve, with five double faults to four aces and just 67 percent points won on first serve.
However, the top-ranked men’s singles player in India will take heart from his run at the 'Sunshine Double', after getting the biggest win of his career and rising to his best ranking.
