Finally, the Indian women’s cricket team won their 7th Asia Cup title in a match against Sri Lanka held today. Team India has won 7 of 8 Asia Cup titles, losing only one to Bangladesh, 4 years ago. They beat Pakistan twice and Sri Lanka 5 times to become champions of this league.
India became champions of the tournament for the 7th time, with Deepthi Sharma (13 wickets) the most successful bowler in the competition and Jemomah Rodrigues (215 runs) leading the list of run-scorers. Sri Lanka scored a mere 65 runs on the board in 20 overs, having won the toss and opting to bat first.
Renuka’s 3 for 5 which made her the player of the match and Sneh Rana and Rajeshwari Gayakwad’s two wickets apiece left Sri Lanka reeling. In the run chase, a whirlwind innings from Mandhana saw her score an unbeaten 51 off 25 deliveries, ensuring India make light work to chase the target in just 8.3 overs.
India can take a lot of confidence from their performance at the Asia Cup, with the ICC women’s T20 World Cup just 4 months away. Congratulating the team, Jhulan Goswami tweeted, “Congratulations BCCIWomen on winning the Asia Cup for the 7th time! A brilliant team effort. So proud of you all.”
Proficient cricketer Hardik Pandya tweeted, “Congratulations what an impressive display! Well done girls.” Virat Kohli’s tweet reads, “Congratulations BCCI women way to go.”
Finally, our country’s prime minister, Narendra Modi tweeted, “Our women cricket team makes us proud with their grit and dexterity! Congratulations to the team for winning the Women’s Asia Cup. They have shown outstanding skill and teamwork. Best wishes to the players for their upcoming endeavours.”
