Hollywood made it abundantly clear where it stood regarding Donald Trump prior to Election Day.
The industry despised him. Full stop.
So what happened when the real estate mogul shocked the globe by defeating Hillary Clinton on Nov. 8, 2016? About what you’d expect. Stars marched against the new president. They pounded him on social media, in press interviews and on screens large and small.
Some, like “Avengers” director Joss Whedon, wished he would die.
In short, they flexed their constitutional rights. And, given Trump’s bombast and occasionally tacky tweets it felt like an appropriate response. Or at least within the bounds of accepted behavior.
Except a few stars went a mite too far. You might say President Trump broke them given their wide-eyed obsession. See if you agree…
Kathy Griffin
The self-described D-lister famously held a decapitated Trump head aloft for all to see. That ISIS-style photo shoot caused a commotion which she claimed came unexpectedly. Hmmm. She later begged for our collective forgiveness for the cruel, unfunny and undignified act. Then she attacked the Trump clan for firing back during a disastrous press conference. Next? She un-apologized and went on tour attempting to milk the controversy.
It all played out like some sad performance art. We felt pity for the clown sporting tear-stained greasepaint.
Ron Perlman
The “Sons of Anarchy” standout did’t attempt anything as ugly as Griffin’s shock photo shoot. Nor did he make many public attacks on Trump. Instead, he used his Twitter account as a 24/7 Trump hate fest. Here’s just one example, with apologies for the mature language:
All y’all woeful muthafuckas had a choice which direction to go. You choice white supremacy and treason. You ain’t dyin…you committed suicide.
— Ron Perlman (@perlmutations) December 24, 2017
Day after day, hour after hour, Perlman lashed out the president with hipster cursing and outright rage. And there’s no end in sight. In February, the actor said he was willing to die to defeat Trump.
More recently?
Perlman had a mini-meltdown on Twitter, vowing to temporarily leave the social media outlet.
Joss Whedon
How do we know Trump broke the man who gave us “Firefly” and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer?” Whedon told us so.
I think I’m broken
I never ran smooth but I think I’m really broken, I’m sorry, I was funny for a while, good times, please keep fighting
— Joss Whedon (@joss) February 7, 2017
That partially explained how he weaponized a group of cancer-stricken teens to attack Rep. Paul Ryan.
He still tweets despite temporarily leaving the social media platform following that embarrassing moment. He still attacks the GOP, though. He recently shared an image of Rep. Paul Ryan with blood dripping from his mouth. Once broken, it’s not easy to be repaired.
Chelsea Handler
Netflix’s lightweight comic spends much of her waking hours attacking President Trump. She’s all but demanded a military coup to take him down. That’s one of her lesser moments as a self-styled activist.
Her Twitter feed is a one-stop shop for limp Trump jokes and outright rage against the president. Yet her fury doesn’t stop with Trump:
You are the worst example of a woman. We all know who should spend less time tweeting, and his name rhymes with frump.
— Chelsea Handler (@chelseahandler) December 20, 2017
Handler quit her self-titled talk show to focus full time on activism. If you buy that we’ve got a Nigerian prince who has a great deal you need to hear.
Rosie O’Donnell
The former “View” host isn’t in the news much these says. She snagged a supporting role on the Showtime series “SMILF” but otherwise is keeping a low profile.
Her venom toward Trump, a nemesis from back in the mogul’s pre-presidential days, never waned. Last month she dubbed the Commander in Chief a “child rapist.” Her rage transitioned into Trump’s policies earlier this month in a way that drew Twitter’s attention.

She first blasted the GOP tax reform by offering to bribe two Republican senators to vote against it. Then, she slurred conservative pundit Ben Shapiro of The Daily Wire fame with a Tweet that the social media outlet yanked from the service. Yes, it was that disturbing.
This week?
The former “View” host got caught by The New York Post going over the legal limit on campaign contributions, using different variations of her name and New York addresses in the process.
Madonna
The Material Girl didn’t spend the year fighting Trump or his administration. She actually did something far worse.
On a cold January day she took to the streets during the Women’s March against the new president. And while fellow celebrity Ashley Judd played the Hitler card against Trump Madonna topped that idiocy.
How?
Let’s let Madonna’s words speak for themselves.
“Yes, I’m angry. Yes, I am outrage. Yes, I’ve thought a lot about blowing up the White House, but I know that this won’t change anything.”
Eminem
Here’s an abridged version of the famed rapper’s media push for his new album, “Revival”
“Please pay attention to me, Mr. Trump.”
Eminem, once a dangerous voice in pop music, echoed virtually every entertainer this year with his multiple Trump rants. The saddest part? He’s repeatedly begging President Trump to respond.
The year’s biggest shock is that the president did no such thing. Or, at least not yet. That left a former superstar shaking his fist in the air … just like every other celebrity. Sad.
Bette Midler
The multi-talented diva didn’t fully engage in politics prior to Trump’s arrival on the scene. Sure, she used her Twitter account to share uninformed global warming updates based on the weather outside her New York abode. In between, she might plug an occasional project.
Now?
Trump and Putin are meeting in Finland next month. That’s a long way to travel for a blowjob, but hey — Putin’s got the money.
— Bette Midler (@BetteMidler) June 29, 2018
Her Twitter feed is as unhinged as the rest of this curious group. She apologized for invoking the n-word in one Tweet, saying Trump’s selection of Brett Kavanaugh for the Supreme Court made her do it.
She also joked about an attack on Sen. Rand Paul that left him hospitalized with broken ribs.
Her Trump hatred even spread to the First Lady. Midler recently attacked Melania Trump’s breasts, drawing outrage given it’s no longer comically acceptable to do so.
Jim Carrey
The former funnyman now spends most of his waking hours painting fever dream portraits of Team Trump.
As the California death toll rises our Sadist-in-Chief is spending $220 million to send troops to the border for nothing. That’s one way to get rid of Democrats. This is no longer politics. This is manslaughter. pic.twitter.com/w5PR9clQea
— Jim Carrey (@JimCarrey) November 15, 2018
He also uses public forums to smite Trump and the GOP with all the unhinged rhetoric he can muster.
“These are not people you can deal with. You cannot be bipartisan with a criminal. A rapist needs to be removed, not negotiated with. These people are raping our system, they’re destroying it right in front of us,” Jim Carrey said, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
“These people have to be removed from our system because they’re bad for us,” Carrey continued. “Trump is a melanoma, and anybody that covers for him, including Sarah Sanders, is putting makeup on it. It shows that there’s a deeper problem in this country, and that problem is greed.”
Note: Carrey is a millionaire many times over.
Judd Apatow
The comedy maestro’s last funny movie came with Amy Schumer’s 2015 hit “Trainwreck.” He’s still busy, cranking out mediocre fare like the Netflix comedy “Love” and spreading fear on his Twitter account. Note: Apatow blocked this reporter on Twitter.
Trump is a giant piece of shit we need to remove before he takes power. Pure corruption. A criminal.
— Judd Apatow (@JuddApatow) December 10, 2016
“Trump is a Nazi. The debate is over,” he declared, earning a stern rebuke from The Federalist.
Ellen Barkin
The “Animal Kingdom” actress drew headlines, but not an ounce of punishment, when she wished death to President Trump on Twitter.
She was just warming up, sadly.
Trump is Rosemary’s baby. The child we hope is never urs. The child who breaks a smaller kids arm & seeks out weakest kid in class 2 blame.
— Ellen Barkin (@EllenBarkin) October 10, 2016
Here, she blames Trump, the most pro-Israel president in recent times, for the death of 11 Jewish people in Pittsburgh.
you did this trump. you blood-soaked monster
11 young ppl 1 chp officer dead, so far. and yes the gunman was white. how do u feel dana loesch murderer? how do u feel wayne la pierre murderer? tell us how we must be armed 24/7 wherever we go. u will reap what u sow #DeadAmerika— Ellen Barkin (@EllenBarkin) November 8, 2018
Then again, maybe Trump did less to Barkin than we thought. In 2012 she wished for Hurricane Isaac to “drown Republicans.”
