Anderson pips Karlovic for Tata Open singles title

Top seed Kevin Anderson won his sixth ATP title when he recovered from a 5-2 deficit in the third set tiebreaker to beat Ivo Karlovic 7-6 (4), 6-7 (2), 7-6 (5) in the Tata Open Maharashtra final on Saturday in Pune. It was Anderson's fourth victory in five meetings against Karlovic. South Africa's Anderson had lost last year's final to Gilles Simon, whom he defeated in the semi-final this time around.

"Firstly want to congratulate Ivo for a great week. What you are doing is truly inspirational... Great to see you playing this kind of tennis. It was really close, it could have gone either way. Obviously very, very pleased to have gone one step further than last year," said the two-time Grand Slam finalist.

Anderson at 6-foot-8 (2.03 meters), and Karlovic at 6-foot-11 (2.11 meters), made this the tallest final in the Open era, according to the ATP website. It beat Anderson versus John Isner at the 2013 Atlanta Open.

The Maharashtra Open is viewed as a key warm-up event for the first Grand Slam of the year, the Australian Open, which starts in Melbourne on January 14.
