Federer wins record third Hopman Cup

Roger Federer became the most successful player in Hopman Cup history after helping Switzerland bat Germany 2-1 in an enthralling final of the mixed team event in Perth on Saturday.

Federer is the first player to win three Hopman Cups, teaming with Belinda Bencic for a repeat of last year's achievement. Federer's maiden victory at the Hopman Cup came in 2001 in partnership with Martina Hingis.

For the second year in a row, the Swiss beat the German pairing of Alexander Zverev and Angelique Kerber by claiming a deciding mixed doubles rubber.

It was Switzerland's fourth title overall, behind only the USA, who have six titles to their name.

On Saturday, Federer beat Alexander Zverev 6-4, 6-2 to give his team a 1-0 loss. Angelique Kerber made it 1-1 for Germany by winning the women's singles. The Wimbledon champion beat Bencic 6-4, 7-6 (6).

So it all came down to the doubles contest to decide the winner. In an extraordinary doubles encounter, Federer led from the front as the Swiss claimed the abbreviated format 4-0, 1-4, 4-3 (5) to clinch the title.
