Nicolas Mahut and Pierre-Hugues Herbert have won the men's doubles title at the Australian Open to become the first French team and the eighth overall to clinch all four Grand Slam doubles title. The fifth seeded French duo beat defending champions Henri Kontinen of Finland and John Peers of Australia 6-4, 7-6 (1) in the final.
The final at the Rod Laver Arena that lasted for one hour and 38 minutes saw just one break of serve when the French team broke Kontinen to take a 5-4 lead and then Herbert held his serve to pocket the first set.
The second set hwas an even tighter affair and went with serve all the way to 6-6. But the tie-breaker saw Mahut and Herbert running away with the set and eventually the match.
The two Frenchmen had first won a Grand Slam together in 2015 when they clinched the US Open title. Next year, they were winners at Wimbledon. Winning the home Grand Slam last year was their third Major as a pair and now with the Australian Open title, they have joined an esteemed group.
The other pairs to have completed the career Grand Slam in doubles are Frank Sedgman and Ken McGregor (Australia), Ken Rosewall and Lew Hoad (AUS), Neale Fraser and Roy Emerson (AUS), John Newcombe and Tony Roche (AUS), Jacco Eltingh and Paul Haarhuis (Netherlands), Mark Woodforde and Todd Woodbridge (AUS) and Mike Bryan and Bob Bryan (USA).
