Period End of Sentence focuses on the work of real life ‘Pad Man’ Arunachalam Muruganathan.
Period End of Sentence, a documentary has won the Best Documentary Short Subject at the 91st Academy Awards (Oscar 2019). The film has been directed by 25-year-old award-winning Iranian-American filmmaker Rayka Zehtabchi.
Guneet Monga who is on the ninth cloud took to Twitter and wrote, Oscar, “WE WON!!! To every girl on this earth… know that you are a goddess… if heavens are listening… look MA we put @sikhya on the map.”
Rayka Zehtabchi said, “I’m not crying because I’m on my period or anything. I can’t believe a film on menstruation won an Oscar.
Period End of Sentence throws light on the stigma of menstruation in rural India. The film also features Pad Man Padma Shri Arunachalam Muruganatham.
The documentary Period End of Sentence feature is set in Hapur village outside Delhi, where the females lead a quiet revolution as they fight against the deeply rooted stigma of menstruation.
Ahead of the Oscars, Guneet Monga wrote on her Instagram, “Started with a small dream in the English department room of @melissa_berton with her school girls of @oakwoodstories for empowering and educating other young girls across the world for better menstruation hygiene. This started 7 years ago with raising money and donating one pad machine… then thought the team should make a movie for better awareness!! @actionindia76 from India helped on ground in putting a machine. @raykaz and @samdavisdp captured all of this so beautifully with @kakarmandakiniproducing for @sikhya”
