AUS Open: Raonic beats Zverev to enter quarter-final

Germany's Alexander Zverev has once again disappointed at a Grand Slam. Touted as a future Major winner and a world No. 1, the fourth seed was blown off the court by Milos Raonic in the fourth round of the Australian Open.

World No. 17 Milos Raonic was ruthless during his 6-1 6-1 7-6 (5) win over world No.4 Zverev that took him to his fourth Australian Open quarterfinal appearance.

The win over Zverev can be termed as the icing on the cake for Raonic thus far at Melbourne Park. The Canadian had beaten the likes of Nick Kyrgios, Stan Wawrinka and Pierre-Hugues Herbert en route to the second week.

"I played incredible today, I did a lot of things incredibly well today and I'm very proud of that. It was tough. I had the match points at 4-5 and would have liked to have played those differently. But I kept thinking forward, concentrating on my service games. I just had to try and stay composed, it was all working well for me today and I'm happy I finished it off like that," said the Australian Open 2016 semifinalist.

Zverev started the match by breaking Raonic in the first game itself with a blistering backhand winner down the line.

That was the only game the German was able to take as Raonic made a brilliant comeback and won the first set with an acute angled volley winner.

In the second set, Zverev held his serve after 47 minutes to make it 1-2 in the second set, but that form was temporary as Raonic capitalised on the fourth seed’s off-day with regards to his serve and raced to a two-set lead.

The third set was much better for Zverev as he took it to the tie-break and even held a 4-2 lead. But Raonic once again showed why he was the better player on the court by winning five of the next six points to emerge the winner.

As for Zverev, getting past the fourth round of a Grand Slam continues to be a big puzzle. In 15 appearances at the Majors, the world number four has made it to the quarter finals just once, at the 2018 French Open.
